NSW: Investigations continuing into Goulburn Jail riot

SYDNEY, April 17 AAP - Three prison officers remain in hospital today following a riotat the maximum security Goulburn Jail in NSW yesterday.

Seven officers were injured when 30 inmates, armed with broken table legs and mop handles,went on the attack yesterday afternoon.

A Department of Corrective Services spokesman said it was not yet known what sparkedthe riot, but the department and police were continuing investigations.

Two of the hospitalised officers are in a serious condition with head injuries.

The spokesman said police were at the jail yesterday investigating the incident andsearches had been conducted to try to locate other weapons.

Thirty prisoners attacked prison guards on the top landing of a maximum security cellblock shortly before the 3.30pm muster.

All prisoners, including those who staged the attack, were locked in their cells andthe jail was secured shortly after 4pm, the spokesman said.

A spokeswoman for Southern Area Health Service said one of the prison guards with headinjuries had been transferred to Canberra Hospital and was in a serious but stable condition.

She said two other prison officers had been admitted to Goulburn Hospital, one in aserious but stable condition and the other in a satisfactory state.

The other four guards had been treated at the hospital and discharged.

Goulburn jail contains the 70 bed super jail, which houses some of NSW's most notoriouscriminals, including backpacker serial murderer Ivan Milat.
