Qld: Liberals maintain pressure on Beattie

BRISBANE, Dec 7 AAP - Queensland Premier Peter Beattie could not be serious about his
complaints that the state was in for a dirty election campaign, according to Liberal MP
Santo Santoro.

Mr Beattie has complained that Liberal Party leaflets distributed at railway stations
yesterday marked the start of a dirty campaign.

The leaflet, authorised by Liberal state director Graham Jaeschke (Jaeschke), said
Mr Beattie could not expect electors to believe he did not know anything about widespread
electoral fraud in the Labor Party, when as party campaign director he ran 16 election
campaigns between 1981 and 1988.

Mr Beattie said the leaflet was the start of the opposition's "dirty tricks" election campaign.

"They've established a dirty tricks campaign which will be designed to personally target
me," he told a news conference.

But Mr Santoro hit back, saying "he can't be serious".

"Given what average, ordinary, decent Queenslanders have heard come out of the Shepherdson
Inquiry (into electoral fraud), how can the Premier possibly complain when they ask 'What
does he have to hide?'," Mr Santoro said.

An unofficial election campaign has been underway in Queensland since Labor was plunged
into minority government by the resignation of two MPs from the ALP in disgrace.

Opposition leader Rob Borbidge has placed his team in election mode and has begun releasing
election policies despite Mr Beattie's determination to hold out for a May election.

Mr Beattie said he had been inundated with complaints about the leaflet.

"The only way they can win the next state election is by personally assassinating me,"

Mr Beattie said.

But Mr Santoro said Mr Beattie knew he was in a weak position as a result of the Shepherdson
Inquiry.

"He's going to have a very difficult time extricating himself from the mess the Labor
Party has got itself into," Mr Santoro said.

Vic: Three chase armed robber after hold up in car park

MELBOURNE, April 25 AAP - Two men, including a 76-year-old, were cut about the arms

today.

The robber was eventually overcome by one of the injured and a third man before police

9.30am.

He threatened the woman with a knife before grabbing her purse and running off.

A 76 year-old man who saw the incident confronted the robber in a nearby laneway and
was cut on the wrist as the robber escaped.

A 58 year-old man also tried to stop the fleeing thief, receiving a slash to his right
arm as he grappled with him.

A third man, a 36-year-old, helped to subdue the alleged offender until police arrived.

The injured men were taken to the Dandenong Hospital where they were treated and released.

A 26-year-old man from Endeavour Hills was helping police with their inquiries.

Tas drugs diversion program model for Australia

The Tasmanian government has announced the first federal-government sponsored alternate
drug punishment laws.

Federal Health Minister MICHAEL WOOLDRIDGE says the program will divert illicit drugs
users from the courts.

Under the treatment-instead-of-punishment program, drug users will be able to choose
between going to court and entering a rehabilitation program.

It is the first state or territory program under the federal government's Tough on
Drugs Diversion program, although the idea has been used in other states.

Dr WOOLDRIDGE launched the program with Premier JIM BACON complete with $3.8 million
Commonwealth funding.

The program will allow anyone caught with less than 50 grams of cannabis to choose
between the courts and a course of assessment, education and treatment.

With cannabis, that choice will apply until after
the third offence, but with harder drugs, there will be only one chance and the allowable
amount in possession will be less.

VIC:Vic govt tries to stop work bans

The Victorian government has again applied to the workplace umpire to suspend industrial
action by child protection workers.

The Community and Public Sector Union workers are reinstating work bans in the child
protection sector tomorrow following the government's announcement last week it will axe
more than three-and-a-half-thousand public sector jobs.

Union members will also escalate industrial action across other public sector areas,
including extra work bans at state prisons.

Community Services Minister MARY WOOLDRIDGE says the government has applied to Fair
Work Australia to have the bans suspended for six weeks.

She says it's appalling the union would use vulnerable children as pawns in their industrial
bargaining process.

The government's application is due to be heard by Fair Work Australia tomorrow.
